If I build an AR pistol with a brace, do I need to buy a designated pistol lower?  Or can I use just any lower?  How about using a lower I machine myself?

Utah doesn't require serial numbers or registration of AR lowers. If you purchase from a FFL, you may do as you wish with it, pistol or rifle, although you will get a serialized lower if it is a 100% finished receiver. That will be processed like any firearms transaction, with a quick background check. You'll be able to take the lower with you upon purchase. You can also purchase an 80% lower and mill it out then build whatever you want.

If I want to buy a lower that isn't available in a LGS, how much do local FFL's usually charge in Utah to ship to them and handle the transfer? I'm in the Ogden area. Do you have any FFL recommendations?

I like Impact Guns on 1900 West in West Haven. Everyone charges differently but most I've seen charge around $10 to receive. They will need the sending FFLs info before you have the transfer done.
